BUFFALO — Niagara-Wheatfield hockey coach Rick Wrazin refused to go back into his locker room at First Niagara Center after the Division I Federation hockey finals against Williamsville North on Sunday.
The Falcons coach was chased from the room with an ice bucket following a 4-0 Niagara-Wheatfield win on Super Sunday, forcing security guards to intercept a flock of jubilant Falcons that threatened to soak the fresh carpet just outside the Buffalo Sabres’ renovated locker room.
Standing on the plush carpet — now deemed safe — Wrazin told reporters about a Niagara-Wheatfield team that didn’t believe it could knock off the defending state champions just days before puck drop.
“Until Friday they kind of didn’t know or believe that they could beat them,” Wrazin said. “Knowing they were state champs and we came in and saw the (Super Sunday program) with them on it, I think it got the boys going even more and motivated them to show that maybe it’s time for someone new.“
Sunday was the third time in four years the two teams had met in the Federation finals. The Falcons shocked North, 4-3, in overtime in 2009 — their first year in the Federation — and dropped a 2-0 decision to the Spartans the next year. This time, however, it would be Niagara-Wheatfield dominating at every turn.
Falcons senior Dillon Hayes scored a pair of goals and senior goaltender Alex Kammerer stopped all 33 Spartans shots to win the large schools Federation crown in front of an estimated crowd of 2,000 fans in downtown Buffalo.
“It’s like a dream,” said Kammerer, who was selected as the MVP. “We’ve been working so hard all year for this. This is the game, we’ve been thinking about it all season long.”
Kammerer was strong early, stopping a Scott Simms breakaway minutes into the game and making saves behind a Falcons defense that slowed down North’s transition game and limited second chances in front.
“They played phenomenal,’ Kammerer said. “(The defense) did a great job. They kept shots on the perimeter. They didn’t let guys get a sniff.”
Niagara-Wheatfield senior Keith Haseley opened the scoring with 70 seconds left in the first period, gliding alone at the right side of the net a finishing a pass from senior defenseman Corey Becker off a faceoff.
“We missed a breakaway early, we had some shots,” Will. North coach Bob Rosen said. “We didn’t cash (in) when we had our chances. They did a good job early on and they got that first goal, which really hurt.”
Hayes, whose overtime winner against Frontier on Monday sent N-W to Super Sunday, netted his first of the game with just under two minutes left in the second period. The senior whacked a loose puck into a net filled with Spartans goaltender Jake Griebner and a defenseman following a Nick Matos shot that rang off the crossbar.
He scored another thanks to a bit of luck. Midway through the third period, Matos sprung the senior forward with a breakaway pass just at the Will. North blue line. Hayes fired a shot high to the glove side and was stopped, but the puck settled on top of Griebner’s glove, then fell and trickled into the net to make it 3-0.
Becker added the final score with less than four to play, while Kammerer stopped a flurry of Spartans shots in the final minutes to preserve the shutout.
The senior’s best save of the night came early in the third, desperately batting a puck out of the air just inches above the crossbar while sprawled in the crease.
“I was sitting on my butt and I just looked up and saw the puck and waved at it,’ Kammerer said. “I didn’t even know if I got a piece of it. I didn’t realize it until I looked at the instant replay. The whole time I just knew I’m not going to let anything in.”
As Kammerer spoke with the media, a splash and loud cheers echoed from the locker room out into the hallway. Wrazin got his bath after all.
“It was a great feeling,” Hayes said. “He needed to suck it up and take his medicine.”
Wrazin, towel over his shoulders afterwards, was already looking forward to his next ice bath.
“I wanted them to save it for states,” Wrazin said.
The Falcons move on to play Section III champion West Genesee on Saturday.
