AMHERST, N.Y.-Niagara Wheatfield will have the chance to defend its WNY Federation Large School hockey championship. The Falcons beat Lancaster 4-1 Monday night in the semifinals at the Northtown Center in Amherst to earn a spot in the championship game.
Lancaster struck first in the first period when # 8 Manny Manns set up # 12 Bill Delano for what turned out to be the Redskins only goal of the game. The Falcons # 5 Jusin Durkee scored the first of his two goals to it up later in the period and the first stanza ended tied at one. The Falcons took the lead for good in the second period when # 15 Ryan Logar scored the first of his two goals.
Niagara Wheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "our guys did everything we wanted them to do, they played very well. They had a couple of little let downs in our end but overall we figured we'd beat them on the forecheck and we thought we'd be able to get to them deep in their end. We worked the puck down low very well. We took away of lot of time and space and got on them. We shut down Manny Manns the best player in the league so that says a lot about how they played."
Niagara Wheatfield will play Clarence for the WNY Federation Large School championship next Monday afternoon at 4-pm in the First Niagara Center. Wrazin told Stu "repeating is not easy. We said to the boys coming tonight that they had a target on their back. I think they understand it now so hopefully we'll be ready for Clarence."
