Niagara-Wheatfield beats NF in playoff hockey

Niagara Gazette — Niagara-Wheatfield, seeded second in the Large Schools division of the Western New York Hockey Federation playoffs, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and ultimately skated to a 7-2 win over seventh-seeded Niagara Falls High School on Saturday at the Northtown Center at Amherst.

Alex Bauer led the Falcons with a hat trick, while Andrew Connelly, Domenic Senese, Anthony Vekich and Matt Paonessa had one goal apiece. Dakota Becker had three assists.

Nate Sommer turned aside 19 shots by the Wolverines, whose goaltending tandem of Patrick Sisler and Max Asklar combined for 37 stops.

Alex Hailey and Vincent Colosi scored the Wolverines' goals.

The Falcons awaited their next opponent late Saturday, which was to be determined pending the results of two other games that were not yet reported. That game, once set, will be held Tuesday at the Northtown Center at Amherst.
