BUFFALO, NEW YORK - Three Federation Championships are on the line at First Niagara Center during Super Monday.
In the large school championship, top-seeded Williamsville North faces second-seeded Niagara Wheatfield. This is the fourth championship meeting between the two teams in the past six years.
"They have good balance scoring," Williamsville North head coach Bob Rosen said. "They have a couple of real dynamic players. They got some real good lines and their defense is solid and their goal tending's good. So it presents quite a bit of a challenge for us."
"Part of it's just their history. They're one of the best teams in New York state," Niagara Wheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin said. "You know they're well coached. Bobby won his 400th game this year. So you know coming in that you're going to face a team that plays the way they're supposed to play. That from our end, hopefully, does the things we hope to do."
The small school championship game is another one with familiar opponents. Williamsville East and Kenmore East are meeting in the title game for the third time in four years. The Flames won the championship in 2011, while the Bulldogs bounced back to take the crown in 2012.
"Over the years us and Ken East have had great battles," Williamsville East head coach Mike Torrillo said. "I think if we had to have a rivalry game, at this point over the past five or six years, it would probably be Ken East."
Kenmore East head coach Kyle Pray agrees. "Will East and ourselves are common opponents. We're very familiar with each other. We've had some great battles of the past few years... and this year it's two very good teams again and it should be a close game and we're looking forward to the match-up."
The small school championship is set to start around 6:15 p.m.
In the Monsignor Martin match-up, it is a rematch of last year's title game. The third seed St. Joe's once again faces top-seeded Bishop Timon-St. Jude at 4 p.m. Timon has been atop the standings all year, while St. Joe's has rallied from a 6-10 start to the season to return to the championship game.
"It's tough to get here, let alone two years in a row," Timon head coach Gene Overdorf said. "Especially with a school our size. We only have 260 boys in the school. So it's kind of like a David verse Goliath type thing. So I'm proud that we're here two years in a row."
"They're a real good team," St. Joe's head coach Rich Crozier said. "They've got some real strong players offensively. In both games, we were fortunate to get up on them. But they battled back quickly and were able to overcome us. For us to be successful, we're going to have to shut down their top line and certainly play a strong defensive game."
